    Non-governmental organizations

    Non-governmental organizations (associations, foundations), as well as natural persons and religious associations (churches) have the statutory capacity to provide services and benefits to persons with mental health problems, and to set up and operate establishments, including private healthcare institutions operating under a contract with the National Health Fund NFZ, as well as other establishments financed or co-financed by the central or local government (either commune, district or province authorities).

    Self-help for patients and their families

    Self-help groups are voluntary non-profit associations comprised of people who share the same medical condition, mental problems, or life situation. The activities of self-help groups are focused on delivering help to those who participate in them.

  • Community-based services

    Community-based services

    Community-based services is where support is delivered to persons who, because of mental disorders, are unable to cope with the activities of daily living and social interactions. Community-based services are provided at the commune (gmina) level, as one of social assistance tasks delegated by the central public administration, and are delivered through community self-help homes and specialist home care services.

  • Social assistance benefits

    Social assistance benefits

    Social assistance is delivered to individuals residing or staying in the territory of a municipality (commune [gmina], or city district), free of charge; some forms of social assistance are provided against payment, depending on the level of income of the assisted person.

  • 24-h care

    24-h care

    Psychiatric hospital treatment should be applied only in case of severe mental disorders with behaviours dangerous for life and/or health of the patient or his/her family. Inpatient therapy is also dedicated to patients, feeling helpless and lost for their mental disorders, unable to fulfil basic living needs, demanding diagnostics and therapy in conditions of 24-h medical care, deprived of any care at home.

    Other forms of support and care

    Occupational therapy workshops are organisationally and financially independent establishments for people with disabilities (including persons with mental disorders) who are unfit for normal employment, to provide them with social and occupational rehabilitation, thus allowing them to develop or recover skills and abilities necessary to take up employment.
